Description of the exhibit:

Confusion and Loss: Emotion, Metaphor, and Design Process in the Communication of Financial Concepts

The Visualizing Finance Lab (VFL) is a group of academics, artists and educators based at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City who work at the intersection of finance, education and design. The lab’s goals are to research and develop new tools to promote financial literacy and to facilitate communication among designers, art directors, financial educators, financial institutions, and the public. Our focus is on the metaphorically and emotionally rich visualizations embodied in illustration and animation.

The lab’s recent research work has begun to examine the role of visual, metaphorical and narrative representations in explaining complex financial concepts and dynamics and behaviors. We are particularly interested in the power of metaphor to access the emotions that inform financial behaviors.

The images you see here were originally assembled for Visualizing Finance 1.0, Developing a Common Language, a one-day symposium/workshop held at Parsons the New School for Design in New York City on October 22, 2010. For this symposium, we brought financial journalists, editors and designers together to explore the process by which financial illustrations are created in the fields of financial journalism and financial education, toward the development of a shared language through which financial illustrations can be analyzed. The symposium provided an opportunity for us to assert the central role of illustration in fostering understanding and emotional response to content in the financial press. The accompanying gallery exhibit presented an invited selection of illustrations
by artists whose work has appeared in The Economist, The New York Times and other publications.

The images presented here represent a sample of those from the New York City exhibit in the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries. The exhibition has been re-titled, slightly modifed and presented as part of Aalto’s M-Scopes ‘Mediated Significations of Finance’ seminar hosted May 14 -15 by Aalto Media Factory.

Accompanying this exhibit, The Visualizing Finance Lab will present a plenary speech at the seminar entitled ‘Confusion and Loss: The Dual Roles of Emotion and Culture in Understanding Financial Concepts and Enabling Behavioral Change’ at 1.00 pm on Monday, 14 of May.
