Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture and Media Factory is looking for a
Workshop Master, electronics
The position is fixed-term, starting on 23 February 2015 or as agreed and ending on 30 June 2015.
Aalto Media Factory is a platform for collaboration and development in media-related research and education within Aalto University. Researchers, teachers and students from the six Schools of the University are invited to become involved in the factory’s operations, to develop multidisciplinary research and studies around the common theme of media along with various stakeholders from the media industry, the public sector, third sector etc. In Media Factory the main working language is English.
Aalto Fablab, which is located in Aalto Media Factory, is a laboratory that deals with digital design and digital fabrication. Use of equipment and machinery including a laser cutter, 3D printer, CNC milling machine, vinyl cutter and electronics enable people to turn data into things and things into data. In fact, in a Fablab there is a possibility to make almost everything.
The Electro Studio Master develops the electro studio at the Aalto University Fablab within the Aalto Media Factory. The work can be divided into three main tasks: 1) development of the studio, 2) consulting with projects of the students and staff, and 3) educating both personnel and students in the skills of utilising electronics. In addition, involvement in general maintenance of the Aalto Fablab is required.
The person must be able to independently satisfy the requirements of the projects of students and staff. The person must be aware of the state of the art in the field of prototyping-related electronics especially electronics used in artistic contexts. The studio master must be familiar with the current methods and tools in the field and be able to apply them in studio work and education.
The studio master is expected to cooperate with various stakeholders such as students, the personnel of Aalto and suppliers of components. Cooperation with the departments of the university is of primary importance. Furthermore the work requires knowledge of and cooperation with object designers; therefore there is a need to understand design processes.
The successful candidate must have a university degree or university of applied sciences degree in electrical engineering or equivalent skills. S/he must have good oral and written skills in English. On open nature and do-it-yourself attitude are expected. Additionally any experience of Fablabs, as well as knowledge about the FabLab phenomenon and Finnish language skills will be positively credited.
Salary will be determined upon the salary system of Finnish universities and is approximately 2400-2800 euros depending on the competence and experience of the chosen person.
