Haplab

Please note

As the Media Factory merged with Media Centre Lume to become Aalto Studios, many Media Factory operations have now ended or are being re-imagined as part of the new entity. These pages are kept for archival purposes.

What’s the state of the art in digital publishing? Where do we go from here?

Haplab was a happy marriage of haptic interfaces and agile development. We were a center for expertise in publishing for touch screen devices.

We educated, developed and undertook research.

We tested, assessed and evaluated products as well as suggested and created propositions for their improvement. We consulted and coached in every step from Gutenberg upwards.

We emphasized the importance of excellence in UI, IxD and UX and strived towards that goal via design that is guided by research.

Our focus was in publishing; in eBooks, eTextbooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers. We also carried out projects with Finnish publishers and media houses together with our students using the Haplab model.

Background

Design for touch screens requires a different approach than for websites. In the Next Media project, researchers at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture (Aalto ARTS) developed a method for improving the visuality and usability of new digital publications.

The new heuristic method developed especially for tablet publications is a useful tool for implementing good practices, which can improve publication quality and flawlessness at the development stage, as well as improve the user experience.

Status

As  per 1.12.2016 HapLab has been finalised as an Aalto University project. The reports and deliverables are described in here.
