The aim of the new Art and Technology study module is to open up a new area in the multi-disciplinary education and research of art, design and technology within Aalto University. Media art and electronic art are brought up for the first time as an independent topic area. The study module which is 20-25 ects in extent can be incorporated to an MA degree as a personal study module, or minor subject, depending on which masters level study programme the student is enrolled in.
The Art and Technology module is based on a network structure within Aalto University, and with the art scene in Finland and internationally. The art and technology area is seen on the other hand as part of the art scene, and on the other hand as a multi-disciplinary stage for collaboration.
The study module focuses on actual and forthcoming developments in the field, such as ubiquitous technology, mobile media, experimental user interfaces, embodied and wearable applications, public and private space, hacking and open design. Art, design and technology are seen as a continuum where media art concepts often work as boundary crossings.
One of the starting points in the study module has been to make the work done by students and researchers within Aalto more visible. This happens through exhibitions, performances and events, organized in collaboration with others actors in the art field. There is also a group of doctoral student mentors available to the students. This is to support the conceptual thinking in the students’ work.
The Art and Technology study module provides the students with the basic knowledge and skills, both practical and theoretical on interactive media art. The study module prepares students for further studies in the field, and possibly for an artistic MA thesis project, especially in connection with some other major studies that support this.
The Art and Technology module is organised in collaboration between the departments of Art, Media, and Media Technology at Aalto University, and together with Aalto Media Factory.
Application deadline to the study module is 31st May, 2012.
