About Clip Camp presentations and videos

Clip Camp event was held in Media Factory’s new space on 16th of June, 2011. Here is a summary of what was discussed and shown:

Marjo Mäenpää (Aalto University Department of Art and Media in Pori) started the afternoon with a presentation on her “Co-curated Mobile Narratives” project. The idea of the project was to “research how separately filmed mobile videos from the same event or experience could form dramaturgically intensive story”. The videos were machine-edited utilizing predefined theme tags in a web based story generator called MoViE.

Using this method, a remixes were made about a Jazz-festival and Christmas celebrations.

The Clip Camp crowd responded to Marjo’s presentation with further examples of participatory remixes, for example Life in a Day Movie Trailer, The Johnny Cash Project and:

It was noted that many of these crowd-sourced videos rely on a given template. For example in the case of “Star Wars Uncut” the template is the original Star Wars movie, which is chopped in 15 second pieces and these pieces given to the crowd to be re-enacted. Thus the resulting video has the well-edited (and well-known) structure of the original film.

Next, Forrest Oliphant (Aalto University Media Lab) presented his live video remix web application called Meemoo. This video sequencer uses online clips and creates possibilities for musical expression with sound and video. As introduction, Forrest showed us an delightful example of youtube video remixing: ‘My Favorite Color’ by Kutiman. This piece of music is constructed by looping and overlapping musical youtube videos produced by different people all around the world.

Examples of existing YouTube mixing tools include YouTubeMixer and TubeDisco.

Minna Tarkka from m-cult presented “Ambient Kallio”, the hyperlocal media archive project, with the aim of “bringing video to the landscape of open publishing by developing free media archives, and collaborative remix practices.” Developing video metadata and a soft keyword based ontology is in the core of the project. This presentation lead participants’ thoughts to HTML5 services, that allow tagging video with related information and displaying both simultaneously: http://popcornjs.org/ and http://rebelliouspixels.com/semanticremix.

Taru Henrikkson (Aalto University Department of Motion Picture / ELO) spoke about interactive documentaries. The concept of i-docs has developed in the convergence of documentary film making and digital media. “The documentary genre contributes with its several modes of representing reality, and the digital media genre contributes with its new navigating and interacting modes”. These interactive documentaries challenge the traditional “linear” documentary film making. Examples of international i-docs include: Out My Window and Prison Valley.

Clip Camp audience remarked that these i-docs had game-like qualities and their interface brought to mind the “good-old” multimedia cd-roms from the 90s.

Petri Kola (Aalto University Media Lab) presented the research project “Who Wants to Think Audiovisually?”, which started from the assumption that knowledge workers might be using video as a tool when developing ideas, like pen and paper. Petri told that they had however found out that this seems not to be the case: video is more often used as a tool to communicate and share ideas that to develop them. Another remark was that the strength of video was in its ability to evoke emotion and create a shared experience.

In the end of the day, Anna Berg from Media Factory showed the documentary about the Aalto on Tracks project, which took 81 Aalto students and staff-members to Shanghai through Siberia on train. The documentary was produced by Media Factory:
